Rocky Bay Cove is a two to two-and-a-half-hour drive north of Auckland city (allow for traffic delays in peak summer and weekends) and 30 minutes northeast of Whangarei.

To find us, when you reach Whangarei, continue on the state highway through the first set of lights. Gull service station will be on your left, which happens to be the cheapest place to buy fuel in Whangarei so it may be a good time to fill up. Rocky Bay Cove is approximately 38kms away.

Continue straight through the second and third set of lights (passed Burger King on the right). Continue for another 1 to 2 kilometres and straight through the traffic lights. Stay in the right-hand lane.

In another 500 metres or so, you will come to another set of traffic lights. Turn right – there is a Tutukaka Coast traffic sign. The golf course will be on your left.

Continue straight. Go straight through the small roundabout at the top of the hill (the second exit), then straight through the next roundabout which is a further 400 metres or so down the road, also the second exit. If you are looking for a supermarket, take the first exit left at this roundabout into Paramount Parade. There is a Countdown about 500 metres on the left-hand side.

Continue along Kiripaka Road which eventually becomes Matapouri Road. Continue 20 or so kms to Tutukaka. When you reach Tutukaka the Oceans Resort will be on your right.

Continue straight ahead 1km. Take the second turnoff on the right, Waipouri Lane. Take care when turning. The turnoff is on a sharp bend with poor vision of oncoming traffic.

Continue 1.8km to the very end of Waipouri Lane. Approx 1.2km down the drive you will pass through some stone pillars, past a white water tank on your right and past the giant leaves and bucket sculptures. Veer to the right through the second set of stone pillars and past the Guardian at the Gate which will be on your left.

You have arrived at Rocky Bay Cove!

Continue down the drive another 150 metres. You will see implements shed on your left. Immediately opposite the sheds is a grass driveway down to the beach. Drive down and you are there.

The accessory building at the beach will be open. Pitch your tents anywhere you like. The flat area between the ponds is the best area.

Most people park their cars and trailers up by the Moa, above the top pond, just so they are out of the way.
